  • Explore Toronto's Rich Cultural Heritage

Toronto was founded by British settlers in the late 18th century. Originally named York, it was an important battleground during the War of 1812 with the United States. The settlement of York was incorporated as a city and renamed Toronto in 1834. Since then, it's grown to become the largest city in Canada, as well as its commercial capital. Toronto is a cosmopolitan centre and a popular destination for immigrants -- nearly half of its population was born outside Canada. Toronto's cultural diversity is a source of pride for the city, which it regularly celebrates in the form of various festivals throughout the year, such as the lively Caribana parade and the Taste of the Danforth food festival.
